Discovering the Problem
It all started with a simple yet startling realisation. Working in a busy cafe in Auckland, we saw firsthand the enormous amounts of coffee grounds being thrown away every day.
From cafes to homes, coffee ground waste was quickly adding up, contributing to an environmental problem that wasn't being addressed enough. While much effort had gone into reducing coffee cup waste, the story of spent coffee grounds remained largely untold.
A Seed of an Idea
As we looked more closely at the issue, we began to see an opportunity, a way to repurpose what was being treated as waste into something valuable.
Coffee grounds, rich in organic material, have the potential to nourish and revitalise the environment. We asked ourselves, What if we could upcycle this waste into something that helps restore nature instead of damaging it?
Growing EcoBrew
With that question in mind, EcoBrew was born. Our journey began by exploring how coffee grounds could be transformed into products that promote native plant growth and contribute to Auckland's urban greening efforts.
Through research and experimentation, we found that upcycling coffee grounds into plant pots for native species was a practical, sustainable solution to two intertwined problems: waste and biodiversity loss.
Connecting Communities
But EcoBrew is more than just about repurposing waste - it's about people. We wanted to create a system that allows everyone to play a part in protecting the environment.
By offering an easy way for coffee drinkers, cafes, and local businesses to get involved, we’re fostering a community-driven movement toward sustainability. Whether it’s donating coffee grounds or growing native plants at home, EcoBrew is about empowering everyone to make a difference.
